The first ever football match at Worcester Warriors Sixways stadium was a tremendous success this month, despite a frustrating loss for RGS in the last minutes of the match. The RGS 1st XI played an excellent game and were a credit to the School and the ‘Green Army’, who offered fine vocal support in truly awful weather conditions.
The game opened with a strong start from King’s School
who deservedly took the lead. With RGS shaken, King’s siezed the moment and doubled the scoreline. As the minutes ticked by, slowly but surely the RGS team grew in confidence and passed the ball with a real cutting edge, drawing level 2-2 before half time – and looking likely to take the lead at any moment.
RGS continued their dominance and pushed for the winning goal after half time, but sadly could not break the deadlock in driving rain. In a bizarre turn of events, King’s scored the winning goal on the counter attack in the last few moments of the match.
It was a superb spectacle with lots of goals, lots of drama and excellent ticket sales from the RGS community both past and present. RGS had over 600 spectators at the fixture. The whole event will be something the boys can take real pride from for years to come.
