Unlucky RGSAO share the Trophy again
13 February 2009
RGS Worcester & The Alice Ottley School drew 1 -1 with King’s School to share the Worcester City Challenge Cup for the second successive season.
At a rain-soaked St George’s Lane, a slick RGSAO controlled the ball and tempo of the match during an extremely enjoyable encounter. The team had the lion’s share of possession and pulling out some magnificent saves from the King’s goal keeper.
It wasn’t until the second half that the deadlock was broken, after some great play down the right flank resulted in a handball and an RGSAO penalty. The penalty been coolly slotted into the back of the net by Joe Moverley.
As the match heated up the bitter conditions, RGSAO were again deserving of a second penalty after a sublime left wing run resulted in a hard mistimed tackle. This disallowed spot-kick seemed to spark a bit of life into a quiet King’s side and change the RGSAO approach to the match.
In a mad couple of minutes - started by shirt swapping in the King’s squad - a series of holes appeared in the RGSAO defence, which resulted in a number of unanswered King’s attacks. Firstly an opportunity at an open goal was squandered, and as the Tything School enjoyed a small respite Jon Harper popped up with a brilliant individual finish to level the scores.
With time running out and victory only one goal away, an understandable edge of desperation gripped the teams with shots raining in from all directions. Unfortunately that elusive winning goal was impossible to find and the teams left the tie an exciting, action packed draw.
