The Good Woman visits Worcester
6 February 2009
The Good Woman of Schezuan is to pack Worcester’s Godfrey Brown Theatre next week, as RGS Worcester & The Alice Ottley School put on two nights of the essential play to pay tribute to a master playwright – Bertolt Brecht.
Brecht’s famous play - first performed in 1943 – explores and challenges audiences to question the world and society around them, while offering a searing and often fun critique of civilisation run amok.
“Is it possible to be good and survive in this world?” That is the question posed to all who attend and the test set for the RGSAO performers – a question the RGSAO pupils are eager to answer and share with the viewing public.
Chosen by the school’s Year Ten and Eleven pupils and in production since last October the performances promise to intrigue and lead audiences through a night of drama that will last long in the memory.
The thought provoking play will run from Tuesday, February 10 to Wednesday, February 11 in the school’s Godfrey Brown Theatre – on the Upper Tything site – at 7.30pm each evening.
In a play of bumbling Gods trying to improve the world, Lottie Millington will lead as Shen Te/Shui Ta, with Rory Howes performing as Yang Sun. Tim Spalding and Hannah Lambert will also star.
“With such a large multi-talented cast, it has been quite a challenge for Director Stuart Wishart to grab time with his cast - due to their intense sporting and musical commitments. But with the performances approaching it has been amazing to see how well the students have focused and pulled together to produce something of such quality,” commented Andy Rattue, Headmaster of RGS Worcester & The Alice Ottley School.
“I’m very proud of the actors who have worked really hard to master some challenging material. Brecht can often be misjudged as a bit dry, but we’ve had a lot of fun with it and I’m sure the audience will share that too,” added Stuart Wishart, RGSAO Director of The Good Woman of Schezuan.
Tickets are priced at £3 each from RGS Worcester & The Alice Ottley School, for more information or booking advice please call the RGSAO Box Office on 01905 613391, email boxoffice@rgsao.org or visit www.rgsw.org.uk
