Textiles Department
Welcome to the Textiles Department
At RGS Worcester we offer the finest education in fashion and textile design locally. We have the facilities and staff to help you achieve your dreams and set you on the right path to a British Catwalk or American Runway.Facilities
Newly renovated in 2007 the Textiles department has been equipped with a spacious area including a main teaching space, a computer-aided design (CAD) area that includes scanning facilities, access to Adobe Photoshop as well as the software ‘Fittingly Sew’ for pattern drafting. We also have two computerised embroidery machines that students can use to develop their skills in computer-aided manufacture. A sewing machine area that houses enough machines with work stations for each child to use in each lesson. A printing and dying area has been set up for students to enjoy fabric embellishment skills as well as construction skills in using the machines.
The Textiles area has a second teaching room and a sixth form work area where students can work in their free time; this space also has a Fashion & Textiles careers library.
Fashion Show
The work of our talented students is showcased at the biennial fashion show. Featuring two year’s worth of work from students in Year 9 through to A-Level, this show is a spectacular event of fashion, costume, dance and music that allows a large number of the school community to get involved and furthermore to raise money for charity. The fashion show entitled ‘Under Construction’ which took place April 2008 raised almost £3000 which was given to St Richard’s Hospice and The Magg’s Day Centre.Trips
Each year the Textiles department organises two trips. A residential trip during October half term allows AS and A-Level students to carry out research for the assessed coursework as well as to gain an insight into the fashion industry.A second trip, that takes place in June, gives AS students the opportunity to visit a large number of university exhibitions at Graduate Fashion Week in London.
A Centre for Excellence
The Good Schools Guide has awarded the Textiles department with prestigious awards for Excellent Teaching of Product Design at A-Level and has featured in various publications for their success.Teaching
The textiles department benefits from staff that have experience in the fashion industry and textiles. Staff offer extra tuition for students and take an active role in organising the fashion show and trips out focusing on the fashion and textile industry.GCSE & A-Level Results
In the previous two years GCSE grades have been 100% A-C with a number of students continuing onto the A Level course. Students that are new to the Sixth Form have also enjoyed the challenges of the Product Design: Textiles course and in previous years our grades have been over 90% A-C. More recently a number of our students have been awarded full UMS marks in each of the modules taken. The Textiles department is very proud that a large percentage of students have moved on to further education courses in Fashion and Textiles and later, to careers within the industry.
