Ten Tors history for RGSAO

22 May 2009

RGS Worcester & The Alice Ottley School made history this month, recording the school’s first ever female Ten Tors Challenge success.

Saturday, May 9 saw an RGSAO team of five boys and one girl enter and complete the gruelling 35 mile endurance course that is the Ten Tors.

Walking independently for two days across the barren landscape of Dartmoor, the weather was kind to them, but their determination to succeed was clear to all involved.

Led by Seb Nevitt, the RGSAO team also included Ross Anthony, Matt Austin, Tom Downes, Tom Fairman and Holly Allen.

Holly Allen is the first ever RGSAO girl to compete in the Ten Tors.

With preparations for the challenge being key, Chief Trainer Jon Shorrocks took the team under his wing, holding several training sessions to prepare the six strong team.

The whole team completed the Ten Tors, finishing at 15.47 on the Sunday (May 10) and each receiving a medal, as well as a Team Certificate.

“I think the team certificate means the most to me and the team – it really was a team effort. At the end of an emotional 35 mile challenge we were all a little tearful.” commented Jon Shorrocks.

“Throughout the challenge and training, the team gelled together well and supported each other – their determination to succeed was fantastic and it’s great that their hard work is being rewarded.”

“I am extremely proud of each and every one of them.”
