Worcestershire Schools’ Rugby 7-a-side Rugby Tournament – Under 15s

Thursday 26th March

On a blustery afternoon the Worcestershire Schools’ Rugby 7s tournament for the U15s, held at RGS The Grange on Thursday 26th March, took place between sixteen schools.

From the pool stages Bromsgrove, King’s, Old Swinford and Bishop Perowne all made it through to the Cup competition whilst through to the Plate were RGSAO, Kings 2, South Bromsgrove and Evesham High.

The pick of the semi-finals saw Bishop Perowne narrowly beating Old Swinford Hospital 31 – 26 in the Cup and in the Plate, South Bromsgrove had a tense win against Evesham High.

The final of the Cup competition saw Bromsgrove over come Bishop Perowne by 22 – 7 and in the Plate final South Bromsgrove, after conceding an early try, came back to beat RGSAO 26-17.

Worcestershire Schools’ Rugby 7-a-side Rugby Tournament – Under 13s

Thursday 26th March

The inaugural Worcestershire Schools’ Rugby 7s tournament for the U13s, held at RGS The Grange on Tuesday 24th March, proved to be a highly successful tournament between the sixteen schools that took part.

The winners of each pool, RGSAO, King’s, Old Swinford and Bishop Perowne, went through to the semi-finals.

In the final King’s Worcester were put up a good fight but were outpaced by the rangy runners from Old Swinford Hospital, the tournament winners by 38 – 12.

In the Plate competition, the runners up from the pool stage, Hanley Castle comfortably beat Baxter College and Blessed Edwards scraped through by a try against Alvechurch Cof E.

Blessed Edwards then went on to beat Hanley Castle in the final by 24 – 7.

U18 Tournament

Wednesday 18th March

With the strongest squad that has been put out all season RGSAO started with a fantastic win over Cheltenham College (who went on to win the plate competition). Having already lost to them at XV-a-side and at the Marches 7s it made it an even sweeter victory. Nick Houlston and Nat McDonald scored before and Adam Damadzic went over to put RGSAO in the lead 15 – 10, with Sam Wreghitt adding the conversion. Cheltenham scored in the final minute but missed the conversion from under the posts leaving the score 17 – 15 to RGSAO.

Solihull VI Form College were put to the sword by some excellent play by the whole team. The try scores were Sam Wreghitt, Nick Houlston, Toby Wilkinson, Bill Harling, Will Short x2, Howard Brown, and Dan Staines. With all but one of the tries converted RGSAO won by 54 – 0.

The third and toughest game in the pool was against Ellesmere College. RGSAO battled well but conceded two tries in the first-half. However Nat McDonald, Adam Damadzic and Nick Houlston all scored good tries to put RGSAO within a couple of points. Unfortunately the fourth score never came and RGSAO lost 21 – 24.

The pool results meant that we played the winners of Group C in the quarter finals. Bromsgrove got off to a flying start when their tall number 11 caught their kick off and from which they scored. After conceding a second heads started to drop. Nat McDonald powered his way for a fine solo try to lift spirits but RGSAO finally went down 22 – 7.

U15  - Solihull 7s

Thursday 12th March

In the group phase we lost to Old Swinford and a northern team, but, once we had got the hang of how to play sevens, beat Newcastle Under Lyme by three tries to two.  This was an excellent win as they were coached by an ex England coach - Tosh Askew, whose son was also the captain of the team.  The win put us into the semi-final of the vase competition against old rivals King's School, Worcester, who had a quick and skilful team.  By this time our boys were tiring and King's outplayed us, although Christian Jeffcoat scored an excellent consolation try in the dying moments of the match.

All the players put in 100% effort and had a very enjoyable afternoon.

U14 -Dean Close, Cheltenham

Thursday 12 March

The U14 Rugby team travelled  to Dean Close school, Cheltenham on 12 March to take part in the annual Sevens competition.  After a tough pool stage, the team qualified for the Plate competition, having won a tight match against a capable team from St Edward's School, Cheltenham, and losing to Bristol Grammar School and Kingswood school.  The team swept Prior Park aside in the quarter final match to meet once again a St Edward's outfit determined to revenge their earlier loss.  After leading for most of the game, St Edward's scored to level the match 19-19 in the final moments, resulting in a period of sudden-death extra-time.  Harry Taylor scored the crucial try to put us in the final against Bristol Grammar School B, which we won by the more comfortable margin of 29-7.  The whole team showed skill, fitness and character in the tournament, especially when closing out the tight matches.  Harry Greenway scored seven ties on the day, but his effort was complemented by a number of outstanding contributions from Tom Gretton (captain), Chip Lawton, Will Berry, James Hobbs, Ben Rattue, Harry Taylor, Max D'Arcy, Edward O'Hara, Brad Bailey and Angus Wilkie.

U14 - Solihull 7s

Thursday 5th March

The 1st game against Newcastle-Under-Lyme was a close and tough encounter. After a rusty start we pulled together and won the game 10-5 with tries by Will Bury and Dan Ravenscroft (before he broke his collar bone!).

The 2nd match against Bablake was a very one sided contest. RGSAO played extremely well and dominated the whole game and came out victorious 27-14. Tom Gretten scored a hattrick and Harry Greenway and Will Bury one each.

The 3rd match we came against the host school, Solihull. Maybe over confidence got the better of us and wrong decisions were the reason to our downfall. We lost 12-28 with Harry Greenway scoring both of ours.

This meant that we got through to the cup quarters to play Nottingham High School. After a good start, again wrong decisions and getting caught with the ball was our downfall. We came out second best and lost 14-24, having been winning 14 - 12. Tries by Gretten and Greenway!

Overall everyone gained good experience and can only get better! Everyone is looking forward to the next tournament on Sunday 15th March.

RGSAO RFC Senior 7s 2009

Marches 7s , Hereford, Sunday 1st March

Having lost to Solihull, Hereford Cathedral School, Old Swinford Hospital and Cheltenham College at XV-a-side, the squad felt they had some scores to settle.  In the opening minutes of the first game versus Solihull, Nat McDonald broke free and darted over the line.  This was followed by Will Short scoring twice and Alex Crawshaw and Adam Damadzic once to make the final score 29 -5.

In the second pool game Hereford started well before Alex Crawshaw scored twice and Nick Houlston once. In a tense final minute Hereford scored in the corner to make the score 17 – 15, the conversion would have created a draw but it was missed.
In the first round of the knockout competition versus Old Swinford Hospital, RGSAO dominated every aspect of the game.  Sam Wreghitt and Nick Houlston both scored twice and Dan Staines rounded off the scoring to make the final score 34 – 5.

Having worked hard to make the quarter-final, RGSAO ran out of steam against a classy Cheltenham College team.  Despite coming close to scoring a couple of times RGSAO failed to cross the line and ended up losing 28-0.

A fine performance from the whole squad in their first competition of the season.
