RGSAO set to top four volcanoes

3 July 2009

It is four volcanoes in three weeks for RGS Worcester & The Alice Ottley School as pupils prepare for the challenge of a lifetime this summer.

Fresh from five days of winter mountaineering training in the Cairngorms this February, ten Year 12 and Year 13 pupils, two staff and two mountain leaders (from Advertureworks) are set to march on Ecuador and reach four summits.

Over 21 days the team, sponsored by Cotswold Outdoors, will also face and have to climb Cotopaxi, the world’s highest active volcano at 5,897metres. In doing so the pupils will also find themselves on the second closest point on Earth to the Sun (due to the equator).

After the last summit, the group will then face a three day trek and white water rafting in the Amazon.

“I am delighted to be able to take this group of pupils to Ecuador and undergo this challenge. It will be a special trip for us all and one which I am sure will stay with the pupils for a lifetime and have a huge impact on them as individuals,’ commented Robert Gibson, RGSAO Tour Leader.

“I would also like to extend a huge thank you to Cotswold Outdoors for their generous sponsorship, help and support.”

“Such challenges highlight the diverse nature of education on offer at RGSAO. I wish all the team the very best of luck and look forward to hearing about the adventure on their return,” added Andy Rattue, RGSAO Headmaster.
