Physical Education

The aim of the PE & Games Department is to offer a wide range of activities from foundation level to advanced level.

The School has a national reputation in the field of sport, notably in rugby, football, cricket, athletics and rowing. However there is plenty of opportunity for all boys and girls in the school to participate in a variety of activities.

The Department offers AS and A Level Physical Education to add an academic angle to our sporting prowess.

AS Physical Education

Unit G451: An introduction to Physical Education

Section A – Anatomy and Physiology
- The skeletal and muscular systems
- Motion and Movement
 -The cardiovascular and respiratory systems in relation to the performance
of physical activity.

Section B – Acquiring Movement Skills
- Classification of motor skills and abilities
- The development of motor skills
- Information processing
- Motor control of skills in physical activity
- Learning skills in physical activity

Section C – Socio-Cultural Studies relating to participation in physical activity

- Physical activity

- Contemporary sporting issues

Unit G452: Acquiring, developing and evaluating practical skills in Physical Education

This unit focuses on the students performance in two different activity areas and their ability to evaluate and plan for the improvement of performance.

Students must choose two activities from the following areas:

Athletic activities, Combat activities, Dance activities, Invasion game activities, Net/wall game activities, Striking/fielding activities, Target game activities, Gymnastic activities, Outdoor and adventurous activities, Swimming activities, Safe and effective exercise activities

Section A1: Historical Studies

- Popular recreation in pre-industrial Britain
- Rational recreation in post-industrial Britain
- 19th century public schools and their impact on the development of physical activities and young people
- The developmental stages of athleticism in 19th century public schools

Section A2: Comparative Studies

Section B1: Sports Psychology

- Individual aspects of performance
- Group dynamics of performance and audience effects
- Mental preparation for physical activity

- Fluid mechanics physical activity
- Stability and angular motion physical activity
- A critical evaluation of performance in selected physical activities

Section B3: Exercise and Sport Physiology

- Health components of physical fitness
- Application of the principles of training

Unit G454: The improvement of effective performance and the critical evaluation of practical activities in Physical Education.

This unit focuses on practical skills and students will be assessed in their ability to perform effectively in the authentic, contextual situation that the activity is normally performed. Students will also be assessed by observing a live performance and recommending an appropriate strategy to improve the observed performance.


Both A2 units include synoptic assessment which draws together all areas of the course

Students will have eight lessons per week on their Physical Education course, two of these lessons will be practical based. Although much of the course will be taught through practical activities.

Requirement

All students will need to have a keen interest in sport and will need to represent the school in at least one sporting activity, preferably two.

Pupils must be aware that this is not an easy option to take at A-level, students will need to be prepared to work on the scientific elements of the course along with the historical, contemporary and psychological.

Students must have achieved a C or above in their GCSE Science. Pupils will be expected to use their free time to improve on their two chosen sporting activities that they will be assessed in.
