Music Department

Welcome to the Music Department

At RGS Worcester we offer a diverse first class musical education, taught by one of the most dedicated music teams around. Whatever your instrumental passion we have the facilities, ensembles and provisions on hand to bring out your individual talent.

First Class Teaching

Every pupil that enters the school from years seven and eight is encouraged to learn and play an instrument during carefully planned and monitored ‘Class Band’ lessons. Pupils will also be taught to read music, from whatever their starting point, in a practical and rewarding way.

Music becomes a popular option in year nine when a heavy emphasis is placed on using modern music technology. Talented individuals and groups are also fast-tracked and taught harmony to beyond GCSE level.

There is a dedicated A-Level teaching room. Sixth form students follow the AQA syllabus which carries a heavy performance element, as well as studying aural skills and set work. Pupils are also taught basic harmony and counterpoint as a matter of course.

Expert Instrumental/Vocal Tuition

There are two suites of smaller teaching rooms for individual tuition. Tuition on the full range of orchestral instruments is offered, together with piano, saxophone, drum kit and guitar. Vocal tuition is also offered in a range of styles.

Music Scholarships

By competitive audition in the Spring Term, one scholarship of up to 20% can be awarded at 11+ and 13+. Music scholars will also receive free instrumental tuition. Associated Board grade four/five would normally be the standard we look for, but please contact the Music Department for guidance and advice on 01905 613391.

Celebrated Performance

There is a real sense of excitement and involvement in musical performance that permeates across the whole school and wider community. Pupils often attend concerts on their own to see friends play or sing, and major school concerts regularly fill the historic Perrins Hall to capacity.

Over the year:

- A major school concert at the end of every term
- Two informal concerts every term
- Cathedral Choral Evensongs by Chamber Choir every term

Autumn Term:

- Sixth Form Concert
- Big Band Evening
- Carol Service, Worcester Cathedral
- Musical: Recent shows include Return To The Forbidden Planet and Les Miserables

Spring Term:

- House Music Competition and Winners’ Concert
- Cabaret Evening

Summer Term:

The Music Department also undertakes foreign tours, the most recent being to Holland and Spain.
