Maths Challenge adds up to success
22 October 2008
Maths, fun!? Not two words that are normally put together by many people, but if you had been at RGS Worcester & The Alice Ottley School last Friday, you would have a totally different view of what is a traditionally hard and serious subject.
Last Friday (October 17) marked the launch of the RGSAO Maths Community Challenge, an all day event designed to open up mathematics to a larger audience and re-energise the subject. Based around the British Maths Olympiad and with the support of the UK Maths Trust, RGSAO put up around £1,000 to stage the inaugural tournament and captivate the local school community.
Ten teams entered from six schools – RGSAO, King’s School, Elgar Technology College, Bishop Perowne, St Mary’s and Chantry High School - and thoroughly enjoyed their experiences in what was a fantastic group event. For many involved this was a first chance to see maths in this format, but all who participated look forward to next year’s event.
Former National Champions RGS Worcester & The Alice Ottley School came out the overall winners with an impressive total of 206 points from 240; with the Chantry High School, Martley coming a deserving second on 170 points. But results and standings were over shadowed by the community good will on show from all of the participating teams.
“It was a pleasure to open up Perrins Hall and welcome our neighbouring schools to this inaugural event. As a school we pride ourselves on supporting our local community and see events of this kind as a great opportunity, ” commented Andy Rattue, Headmaster of RGS Worcester & The Alice Ottley School.
“At RGSAO Mathematics is an extremely popular subject with our pupils. The school is lucky to have some of the finest teachers and facilities around and a tradition of fantastic results.”
“Hopefully our community maths initiative has opened up the subject to new external students and shown them that these traditionally hard subjects can be very rewarding. That would be a fantastic result!”
