Fencing bronze for Kettle
30 January 2009
RGS Worcester & The Alice Ottley School made history last weekend, recording the schools first female fencer to finish within the top three in the British Youth Championships.
Competing at Fenton Park in Stoke on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th January, RGSAO pupil Gabby Kettle of Edgbaston, Birmingham competed with 46 others from all over the UK, finishing the Under 16 Girls Epee event in third place. Gabby was one of only four female Under 16 Epee Fencers at the British Youth Championships National Age Group Finals from the West Midlands.
Gabby is also the first girl from RGSAO to fence in the Great Britain U17 squad, having competed in three internationals this season, out of a possible four – including Gothenburg this weekend.
The independent school had previous fencing success with Chris Carr back in 1996. Chris went all the way to the World Under 17s Championship and won the Under 18s British Youth Championships in 1996.
