Design Technology Department

Welcome to the D&T Department

At RGS Worcester we offer the very best education in design and technology across the Midlands. Our award winning and recognised department gives every pupil the chance to become the next top inventor or engineer.

The Finest Facilities

The excellent facilities are situated in the dedicated design centre on the Little London site. On the ground floor there is a spacious workshop and design studio geared to manufacturing and electronics. A second workshop and design area are equipped for working in wood and plastics. On the top floor of the building is an additional design studio and Computer Aided Design suite.

Extensive use is made of advanced manufacturing systems. This includes the use of computer aided design and manufacturing for the production of project work with all year groups. Computer controlled equipment includes two lathes, two milling machines and a large laser cutter. Pupils are encouraged to use programmable systems in their assignments to make projects that have embedded technology. Programmable robots are amongst the tasks undertaken by all pupils in the lower school.

We are also proud of the more traditional project work produced by our pupils working in wood, metal and plastic. The quality of the work is outstanding and a major exhibition of the work is set up each year.

Gifted and Talented

We make every effort to recognise pupils (click here for recent awards won) who are gifted and talented in the field of design and technology by entering them for one of the many competitions open to all age groups. The foyer to the design centre has a very impressive display of the pupils who have achieved success in various competitions.

For over a quarter of a century our pupils have won awards in engineering, design and innovation challenges every year. Two pupils have patented projects they have designed.

Scholarships

We are the top school in the midlands for obtaining prestigious Arkwright Scholarships. Only 120 are awarded across the entire UK each year. If a school manages to get one pupil to pass the examination and interview it is exceptional. With so few awards across the country two scholarship awards for a school would be outstanding. For the past two years, four RGS candidates have managed to obtain these elite awards. A truly exceptional achievement and one which reflects the high expectations we have of pupils working in the D&T department.

A Centre of Excellence

Visit the web site for the D&T Department and follow the link to ‘Engineering a Class Act.’ The work of pupils in the department has been featured in a magazine sent out to all schools and produced by the technology enhancement program. The article recognises the excellence of the work of the D&T Department at RGS Worcester.

Teaching

David Cotterill and Mike Howard are supported in their teaching by an excellent technician, Chris Ford. We work to the strength’s of individual pupils be it from the artistic to the technological. The workshops are open to pupils most days after school so that they can continue to pursue their interest in the subject. We pride ourselves in getting to know pupils as individuals and encouraging them to produce quality project work at all levels.

GCSE and Advanced Level Results

The public examination results for the department are exceptional. A2 Product Design candidates have, over the past seven years, achieved 100% A and B grades on three occasions and the A/B pass rate has never been lower than 86%. Over the same period of time the number of pupils achieving an A* or A grade at GCSE has been, on average, more than 70%. In two years the pass rate exceeded 90% A * and A grades. These are a testament to the hard work and effort put in by both pupils and teachers.
