Chinese Culture and Mandarin at RGSAO

24 October 2008

I am pleased to tell you that our first Chinese Exchange teacher, Miss Jiang Yuanqi, arrived in the UK in the first week of October. Miss Jiang is a teacher of English at Suzhou Foreign Languages School and will be with us until the end of this term.

Miss Jiang will be teaching a variety of classes at RGSAO and she will also be spending one day per week each at The Grange and Springfield. She will mainly be teaching able linguists in Years 7, 8 and 9 as well as Sixth Formers who wish to devote some of their private study periods to sampling Chinese. We will also be running some lunchtime and after school clubs so that any other pupils interested can come along. Miss Jiang will be replaced by another Chinese Exchange teacher in January, so we hope that by Easter 2009 as many pupils as possible will have had some exposure to Chinese Culture and Language.

A number of parents have told me that they would like the opportunity to find out more about China and to perhaps learn a little Mandarin. With this in mind, we have arranged four evening sessions during November/December when Miss Jiang will introduce her country and its culture and language to adults with an RGSAO connection. The sessions will take place on 13, 20 and 27 November and 4 December, beginning at 7.00pm and lasting 90 minutes. They will take place in the Language Laboratory. We would recommend that people interested opt into all four sessions en bloc since they will form a coherent course. The same material will not be repeated each time. The course will be free of charge and open to any adult in the wider RGSAO community. Places will be limited to 20 people. If you are interested, please do telephone my PA, Jill Gaynor-Smith to book your place, or e mail her on jdg@rgsao.org

I believe that this is an exciting opportunity for all of us to look beyond our own culture and, if you are planning a visit to China, then some prior knowledge could be indispensable.
